Mumbai: When Rahul Dravid took over as India coach, VVS Laxman reportedly turned down an invitation from the BCCI to replace him with the President of the National Cricket Academy (NCA). The BCCI is considering a player who has made great contributions to Indian cricket for the post of NCA President. Earlier, Laxman was among those considered along with Dravid and Kumble for the post of Indian coach.

In case Laxman rejects the BCCI invitation, the BCCI will have to consider other names. Dravid was appointed BCCI NCA president in 2019 after successfully coaching the India A and Under-19 teams. The appointment was for two years. During his tenure as NCA President, Dravid also coached the Indian team on the tour of Sri Lanka.

Last month, the BCCI renewed Dravid’s contract for another two years as NCA president. But when the BCCI asked Ravi Shastri to take over as coach after the T20 World Cup, Dravid initially turned it down. It was reported that Dravid did not take over as coach as he was reluctant to leave Bangalore with his family.

Following this, the BCCI selected MS Dhoni as the mentor of the Indian team for the T20 World Cup. However, the BCCI again approached Dravid for the post of coach after Dhoni made it clear that he would not continue as a mentor after the World Cup.

During the IPL final, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah met Dravid and agreed to take over. Despite agreeing in principle with Dravid, the Lodha Committee formally invited applications for the post of BCCI coach as per the recommendations.

After retiring from cricket, Laxman has been working as a commentator and mentor of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL.
