Marine Le Pen Offers Tacit Support to New French Prime Minister Michel Barnier

By Dora Constantinovici (www.b1tv.ro)

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen has expressed her willingness to work with the country’s new prime minister, Michel Barnier, citing their shared stance on immigration.

Barnier’s Immigration Policy

Barnier, a member of the right-wing Republican party, has proposed a freeze on immigration from outside Europe for three to five years. This position aligns with Le Pen’s views on the matter.

Le Pen stated, “It is undeniable that Michel Barnier seems to have the same position as us on migration.” Her comments suggest that she may not oppose Barnier’s appointment as prime minister.

Electoral Arithmetic in France’s New Parliament

The French parliament is currently divided among left, right, and center parties. Macron’s appointment of Barnier as prime minister must survive a vote of no confidence.

Le Pen’s tacit support for Barnier is significant, as it could influence the outcome of the vote. However, the left-wing New Popular Front group has already rejected Barnier’s appointment.

Barnier’s Background and Career

Barnier has had a long and distinguished career in politics, serving as a minister and European commissioner. He gained prominence as the European Union’s chief Brexit negotiator.

As prime minister, Barnier’s stance on immigration could be crucial in securing support from the far right in parliament.
