Leadership Instability and Controversy Surrounding EP Jayarajan’s Absence at Civil Code Seminar

CPM Seminar in Kozhikode Marred by EP Jayarajan’s Absence

Thiruvananthapuram: The only civil code seminar held in Kozhikode yesterday faced a setback with the absence of EP Jayarajan, LDF convener and member of the central committee. This unexpected absence derailed the discussion from the main agenda of the seminar.

EP Jayarajan had arrived in Thiruvananthapuram yesterday morning, but decided not to attend the Kozhikode seminar. Responding to queries, Jayarajan clarified that he had informed Kerala Kaumudi about his non-participation two months ago. He also added that not all Central Committee members would be present at the seminar.

The decision triggered speculation that Jayarajan’s absence was a strategic move, signifying a discord within the CPM. This interpretation gained further momentum when MV Govindan, secretary of state and member of the Politburo, expressed his discomfort with Jayarajan’s boycott. Govindan urged that Jayarajan be questioned about his absence and emphasized that the LDF convener should not be invited separately.

Adding to the discontent, the constituent parties, including the CPI, expressed dissatisfaction with the invitation extended to the Muslim League to participate in the seminar. Jayarajan found himself embroiled in further controversy due to these developments.

Despite being able to attend yesterday’s party event, EP Jayarajan’s absence from the state secretariat meeting on Friday has drawn criticism from within the party. These series of events lend credence to the notion that Jayarajan’s actions were deliberate.

EP Jayarajan’s Prolonged Absence Puts CPM Leadership under Strain

EP Jayarajan has been frequently absent from CPM leadership meetings, citing health issues. While MV Govindan has assumed dual roles as secretary of state and member of the Politburo, Jayarajan’s non-participation has raised concerns. He continues to participate in local party programs as well as activities of class and mass organizations. Jayarajan has staunchly defended the government, CPM, and SFI during controversies, but his absence during critical leadership meetings poses challenges. Notably, Jayarajan’s non-attendance resulted in the Left Front being unable to participate in the LDF’s siege on Raj Bhavan against the governor.

This series of events began with allegations against Jayarajan during a state committee meeting, which coincided with his non-cooperation. The controversy surrounding the ayurvedic resort in Kannur, wherein Jayarajan’s wife and son have a stake, has deeply affected the CPM. Although Jayarajan attended a few subsequent leadership meetings, he alleged a conspiracy behind the controversy. However, even after the issue subsided, he continued to stay away from these meetings. This not only reflects poorly on his commitment to the Local Development Framework, but also undermines his standing among the electorate. Consequently, Jayarajan’s absence at the party’s significant seminar has further fueled discontent and speculation.
