A secretary who served as presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party of Korea for eight years is controversial after being convicted of involvement in a gang assault by gangsters. Candidate Lee explained, “I did not take part in the violence, but it is true that I was punished for being at the scene.”

According to the Dong-A Ilbo coverage on the 17th, Kim, who served as Lee’s protocol secretary, was indicted without detention at the Seongnam District Office in March 2009 on charges of violating the Act on Punishment of Violence and Other Acts (injuries such as groups and weapons). In July of the same year, Seongnam Jiwon sentenced Kim to six months in prison and one year of probation. As the prosecution and the defendant did not appeal, Kim’s sentence was confirmed as per the judgment of the first trial.

According to the ruling, Kim was accused of violence that occurred in September 2007 when an unauthorized security company ‘Special Guard Corps’ mobilized 43 people, including the general market group and the international mafia, who are organized gangsters in the Seongnam area, to take away security services from an officetel in Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do. He was charged with participating in the scene. A member of the special security corps assaulted the employees of MIB System, an existing operator, in order to take away the security service work of Officetel A in Bundang-gu.

Kim and others visited Officetel A around 2:00 am on September 8, 2007, and it is said that the employees of MIB System, an existing security service company, resisted by locking the iron door and spraying fire extinguishers. However, it is known that Kim and others ripped off the iron gate and then dragged out the employees of the existing service company and assaulted them. The special security corps to which Kim belongs is an unauthorized security company run by Mr. Lee, who was active in the Seongnam area. Mr. Lee was also prosecuted in February 2011 for the assault case. sentenced to a year The following year on appeal, the judgment of the first instance was maintained and the sentence was confirmed. Mr. Kim was hired as an assistant secretary (equivalent to level 5) at the branch office of the Gyeonggi Provincial Office from 2018, when candidate Lee was elected governor of Gyeonggi Province after serving as an assistant secretary since 2014, when Lee was mayor of Seongnam. After Lee ran for the Democratic Party primary, it is known that he and other secretaries resigned in July this year and have been working in Lee’s camp. The People’s Power said, “We need to verify how Kim was selected as a protocol secretary and what role he plays in the presidential campaign.”

Regarding this, Candidate Lee’s side said, “The claim that Mr. Kim was involved with a gangster is not true at all. There was no reason for disqualification during the recruitment process,” he explained.
