The trial of Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party, on charges of breach of trust in the development of Daejang-dong has resumed after 35 days. Congressman Lee, who arrived at the Seoul Central District Court building for the trial this morning, walked toward the court without saying anything to reporters’ questions, such as “What do you think about the suspicion of trial delay?” and “Do you have any intention of directly refuting Yoo Dong-gyu’s claims?” .
At the trial held today at the 33rd Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Court (President Kim Dong-hyeon), the defense lawyer cross-examined Mr. Yoo Dong-gyu (former head of the Seongnam Urban Development Corporation), who appeared as a witness . At the trial, Mr. Yoo worked as a close associate of Representative Lee and stated, “Seongnam city officials and I made construction-related commitments during Representative Lee’s election in Seongnam in 2010.” Rep. Lee’s side countered by saying, “At the time, Rep. Lee made a point of gathering opinions from academia and experts.” At the same time, he said, “Former director Yoo didn’t even know that Seongnam City had directly participated in the Pangyo development project at that time, so would he entrust the construction effort?”
Representative Lee and Mr Yoo, who first met at the trial of this case on November 7 last year, met again in court 77 days later. The two people sitting in place of the accused and the witness did not exchange questions or answers.
The two faced off in court in March and April last year, when Yoo appeared as a witness in Rep. Lee’s trial on Official Public Elections Law charges. At the trial on April 28 last year, Representative Lee personally came forward to question Mr Yoo, resulting in a battle between the two.
Congressman Lee appeared on trial for two consecutive days following the alleged “incitement to perjury” the previous day. Including the trial for violation of the Official Public Elections Law on 1919, he has attended three trials in the past five days.
