Lee Jae-myung’s attacker, controversy over party affiliation… People Power Party → Democratic Party member

There is controversy over the party affiliation of the criminal who attacked Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea.

According to the political world on the 4th, it is understood that a person with the same name and date of birth as Mr. Kim, the suspect who attacked Representative Lee, maintained his party membership from 2015 to 2020 during the time of the Saenuri Party, the predecessor of the People Power Party. Afterwards, Mr. Kim joined the Democratic Party of Korea in April last year and reportedly held membership in the Democratic Party for about 10 months.

During the police investigation, Mr. Kim is known to have stated, “After repeatedly joining and leaving the conservative party, I joined the Democratic Party last year.”

Hong Ik-pyo, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, appeared on MBC Radio’s ‘Kim Jong-bae’s Focus’ on this day and said, “The suspect’s party membership is strangely controversial,” and “Party membership is not the essence of the case.”


On the same day, Chung Cheong-rae, a top member of the Democratic Party of Korea, said regarding Mr. Kim, the suspect in the attack on Representative Lee Jae-myung, “We assume that he joined the Democratic Party after leaving the People Power Party.”

Meanwhile, the police searched and seized the office and home of the real estate agent he ran located in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, in order to determine the motive for Mr. Kim’s crime.
