South Korea’s new President, lee Jae-myung, has promised to prioritize economic recovery and improved relations with North Korea.Taking office after a decisive election victory, Lee aims to address the nation’s recent political and economic instability.
Lee, representing the Democratic Party of Korea, succeeds Yoon Suk-yeol, whose tenure was marked by controversy, including a brief imposition of martial law. During his inaugural address at the parliament Wednesday, Lee committed to reversing the course of recent uncertainty and widespread protests.
The new president also faces challenges from the United States, a key ally, were rising trade protectionism under President Donald Trump threatens South Korea’s export-driven economy.
lee secured 49.4% of the vote in this week’s election, surpassing conservative candidate Kim Moon-soo.Voter turnout was the highest as 1997.
“A Lee Jae-myung government will be a pragmatic pro-market government,” Lee said.
Lee stated his intention to improve relations with Pyongyang, focusing on de-escalation while pursuing dialog. He emphasized the importance of peace on the Korean Peninsula.
“We will heal the wounds of division and war and establish a future of peace and prosperity,” he said.
“No matter how costly, peace is better than war,” he added.
He also addressed economic concerns, highlighting the threats posed by “rising protectionism and supply chain restructuring.” Lee pledged to tackle the rising cost of living,notably for middle- and low-income families.
The previous caretaker government failed to secure a trade agreement with the Trump administration to alleviate proposed tariffs.While Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs are currently paused, South Korean exporters face a 50% tariff on steel and aluminum products.
What’s next
President lee is expected to quickly assemble his cabinet and begin negotiations with both North Korea and the United States to address economic and security concerns.
