Left in Shambles: Gleisi Unleashes Scathing Rebuke on Padilha Over Poll Performance

October 29, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor News

Gleisi Hoffmann, the president of the PT, publicly reprimanded the Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, for saying that he “did not leave the Z4 party” in the municipal elections. According to the PT leader, it is necessary to “refresh the memory of the minister” about what has happened to the party since 2016.

The president of PT, Gleisi Hoffmann, publicly reprimanded the Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha (PT), for saying that the party “has not left Z4” in municipal elections since 2016. In Brazilian football, the term is used to refer to teams in the relegation zone.

“Padilha should focus on the political expressions of the government, under his responsibility, which helped achieve these results”, announced Gleisi on social media. “More respect for the party that fought for Lula Livre and Lula Presidente, when many did not believe.”

According to the PT leader, it is necessary to “refresh the memory of the minister” about what has happened to the party since 2016, the year of the impeachment of former president Dilma Rousseff (PT).

“We pay the price, as a party, of being in a broad coalition government. And we are on the offensive extreme right wing. Offending the party, making fun, and diminishing our national effort does not help change this interplay of forces.”

Hours earlier, Padilha declared that the PT must carry out a “detailed assessment” of the municipal councils, but denied that this year’s election will have an impact on 2026.

“The PT is the national champion of the presidential elections, but, in my opinion, it has not yet left the Z4 that entered the municipal elections in 2016,” he said.

PT members won 252 city halls in 2024, behind PSD, MDB, PP, União Brasil, PL, Republicans, BGC and PSDB. There was an alarming growth compared to the 184 elected in 2020, but the party had only one victory in capital letters: with Evandro Leitão, in Fortaleza. The defeat of allies, such as Guilherme Boulos (PSOL) in São Paulo, also caused widespread internal repercussions.

The National Executive Committee of the party met on Monday afternoon to analyze this whole scenario. At the meeting, there were differences over the decision to give up his own candidacy in the capital of São Paulo and support Boulos, who lost in the second round to Ricardo Nunes (MDB).

“Boulos was the foretold chronicle of death! The wrong candidacy in the wrong city! There were Márcio França, Tabata Amaral and even Ana Stela Haddd”, wrote the national vice president Washington Quaquá on social media. Members of the PT leadership, such as deputy Carlos Zarattini (SP) and Gleisi himself, disagreed with the elected mayor of Maricá (RJ).

“Boulos is a person who has certainly achieved what we wanted for the candidacy in São Paulo. Yes, it showed that he was competitive”, declared Gleisi after the meeting. “I wonder: who in the PT would run or what other candidate would be built in the center or the center-right field in São Paulo?”

He also praised the fact that the PSOL candidate stayed alongside the PT in the impeachment of Dilma and the arrest of Lula in Lava Jato, in 2018.

Making a metaphor with football, Alexandre Padilha said the party is in the Z4 (relegation zone) of the municipal elections.
