A significant shift is underway at Legia Warsaw, with Director of the Academy, Marek Śledź, set to depart the club by the end of February. The move comes following the arrival of Marek Papszun as Legia’s head coach, a relationship marked by prior tension during their time together at Raków Częstochowa.

According to reports, the dynamic between Papszun and Śledź deteriorated at Raków, with Papszun reportedly questioning the quality of players being developed and supplied by the academy, not just for first-team consideration but even for training purposes. This pre-existing friction made Śledź’s departure almost inevitable upon Papszun’s appointment at Legia in the winter break.

Śledź reportedly informed his close colleagues of his impending exit, shortening an initially expected departure timeline to the end of the year. While Legia Warsaw’s youth team recently achieved a historic victory – defeating Ajax Amsterdam 2-1 to advance to the Round of 16 in the UEFA Youth League on February 5, 2026 – the administrative changes are proceeding.

Succession Planning at Legia’s Academy

The search for Śledź’s replacement is already underway, with several names circulating. Artur Kolator, a former Vice President of the Mazowiecki Związek Piłki Nożnej (Mazovia Football Association) for youth development, is considered a potential candidate. Wojciech Tomaszewski, currently working at ŁKS, and Jacek Zieliński, who previously held the role of Sporting Director at Legia and is now a board advisor, are also in contention. Piotr Zasada, the current head of scouting, is also reportedly interested in the position.

Another name mentioned is Rafał Matusiak, Śledź’s current deputy, who was reportedly recommended for the role by the outgoing director. The club has not yet announced a timeline for naming a successor.

Śledź’s Potential Future

Marek Śledź is being linked with a potential move to Pogoń Grodzisk Mazowiecki, with reports suggesting he is actively pursuing the position of club president. However, the current president, Jakub Dębiec, is well-regarded within the local community for his work in stabilizing the club’s sporting and financial affairs, presenting a potential obstacle to Śledź’s ambitions.

Śledź brings a wealth of experience in youth development, having previously held positions as head of academies at Lech Poznań, Miedź Legnica, Raków Częstochowa, and Legia Warsaw. He is most recognized for his success during his tenure at Lech Poznań.

During his time at Legia Warsaw, Śledź is credited with establishing a partnership with Pogoń Grodzisk Mazowiecki as a feeder club, providing a platform for young players from the academy to gain valuable playing experience.

Recent Staffing Changes at Legia Warsaw

Śledź’s departure is the latest in a series of changes within Legia Warsaw’s organizational structure. On December 23, 2024, Jacek Zieliński was removed from his position as Sporting Director, transitioning to a role as a board advisor. This decision, described as unexpected, occurred without a clear succession plan in place.

Following Zieliński’s removal, a “transfer committee” was formed to oversee player recruitment during the winter transfer window. This committee comprised Dariusz Mioduski (President and Owner), Marcin Herra (Vice President), Jacek Zieliński (Advisor), Radosław Mozyrko (Head of Scouting), Jarosław Jurczak (Finance), and Gonçalo Feio (Head Coach).

The winter transfer window saw the arrival of Wahan Biczachczjan, a right-winger, along with a striker and a goalkeeper. However, the performance of these new signings has been largely underwhelming, leading to criticism directed towards both Feio and Zieliński.

Coaching Staff History

As of February 5, 2026, Edward Iordănescu remains the head coach of Legia Warsaw, despite a recent run of three consecutive defeats. His contract details remain undisclosed, but club officials have confirmed his continued leadership. Gonçalo Feio previously held the position from April 10, 2024 to June 30, 2025.

Other past managers include Kosta Runjaić (July 1, 2022 – April 9, 2024), Aleksandar Vukovic (two separate spells), Czesław Michniewicz, and Henning Berg, among others. Marek Papszun was appointed on December 19, 2025.
