The Togolese are preparing to go to the polls on April 29 for the legislative and regional elections. A total of 113 deputies and 179 regional councilors will be elected during these ballots. And this is the first time that Togo is organizing regional elections.

Started last Saturday, the electoral campaign was calm and in a good-natured atmosphere. In the capital, caravans of candidates crisscross the main arteries and pass each other without incident.

“We welcome the peaceful state of mind of the population and the calm that has reigned since the start of this campaign. The state of mind of the population is good, the caravans pass each other, the activists pass each other, there are no insults,” appreciated Isaac Tchiakpè, Spokesperson for the Union of Forces for Change ( UFC), during a meeting with journalists.

“We have a climate of stability. We hope that after the election, the political parties will maintain this state of fraternity. It is an electoral competition and in any competition, there are winners and losers,” he added.

“Our teams and our candidates are very well received. I myself started the campaign in my original electoral constituency which is Est-Mono. We had a very nice caravan, followed by a mega gala tournament. The next day, we toured one of the seven cantons of the prefecture with the populations who are very enthusiastic,” greeted Gerry Taama, president of Nouvel Engagement Togolais (NET).

“Overall, this double electoral campaign is taking place in good conditions of peace and serenity, and I am rather delighted that the Togolese people continue to demonstrate this maturity,” he added.

On the ground, the charm operation is carried out in various ways: caravans, door-to-door canvassing, social networks, etc. Small meetings are held in small neighborhoods. The candidates wait until the last week for the giant meetings.

“This climate of serenity observed since the start of the campaign is to the credit of the Togolese head of state. And we must at all costs keep the same pace, until the end of the electoral process,” confided Pierre Paul Digan, activist of the Union for the Republic (UNIR, ruling party), met during a small meeting to the beach.
