Leicester City have been relegated to England’s third tier for the second time in their history, confirming a dramatic fall from grace just ten years after their historic Premier League title win in 2015-16.

The relegation was confirmed following a 2-2 draw with Hull City at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday, April 21, 2026. The result left Leicester unable to avoid dropping from the Championship into League One for the 2026-27 season, despite needing a win to survive.

This marks only the second occasion in Leicester City’s 142-year history that the club has competed in the third tier of English football. Their previous stint came in the 2008-09 season, when they won the League One title and earned immediate promotion back to the Championship.

The club’s descent comes exactly a decade after their improbable Premier League triumph, when they defied 5,000-1 odds to win the title under manager Claudio Ranieri. That achievement was widely celebrated as one of the greatest underdog stories in sports history.

Leicester’s recent struggles have been compounded by financial difficulties. Earlier in the 2025-26 season, the club was deducted six points for breaching the English Football League’s financial rules related to their promotion in the 2023-24 campaign. An appeal against the penalty was unsuccessful, leaving them in the relegation zone.

The team also experienced cup success during this period, winning the FA Cup in 2021. However, inconsistent form and ongoing challenges ultimately led to their downfall, with the club finishing second from bottom in the Championship table.

For the upcoming 2026-27 season, Leicester will face clubs such as Doncaster Rovers, Wycombe Wanderers, and Bromley in League One. The local derby fixtures could include matches against Peterborough, Mansfield Town, Burton Albion, or Notts County, depending on the final league composition.

The relegation represents a significant shift in fortune for a club that had enjoyed sustained success in the top flight following their title win, including regular European qualification and another major trophy in the FA Cup. Their return to the third tier marks the end of an era and a stark reminder of football’s unpredictability.
