Level Health Launches in Ireland: Simplified Health Insurance with Competitive Pricing and Wide Access

November 17, 2024 Catherine Williams Business

New Health Insurer Launches in Ireland

Level Health launched today in Ireland. This new health insurer offers simple plans, lower prices, and broader access to health services. It aims to increase competition in the health insurance market.

Level Health is backed by Aviva and led by experienced professionals from the industry. The company provides just four policy options compared to nearly 350 options available from other insurers.

Jim Dowdall, CEO of Level Health, stated, “The launch marks a pivotal moment for a broken Irish health insurance market.” He added that customers are often confused by complicated plans and limited options. Level Health aims to bring clarity, simplicity, and real competition to the market.

The company has agreements with public, private, and high-tech hospitals. It also offers better access to diagnostic, urgent care, and emergency centers than any other insurer in Ireland.

Level Health provides instant digital access to healthcare professionals and allows face-to-face appointments. Customers will also benefit from free worldwide travel insurance, including for winter sports.

Children under three will be covered free on all plans. A family of four switching from comparable plans can save an average of €500 with Level Health. Customers will not need to re-serve waiting periods when moving from another insurer.

The firm is a 50:50 joint venture between Aviva and its founders, with a total investment of €20 million. Co-founders include Oliver Tattan, former Vhi CEO, and other industry experts.

This launch brings welcome competition to a market dominated by VHI, Laya, and Irish Life Health. The Health Insurance Authority (HIA) noted that many consumers feel overwhelmed by the number of policies and called for market simplification.

Health insurance premiums have risen by 7% in the last six months. Research shows most customers have never switched policies. Dermot Goode from Total Health Cover highlighted the simplicity of Level Health’s offering, stating the potential for savings is attractive.

Mr. Goode believes consumers will find this news interesting. He anticipates existing providers will react to Level Health’s launch. “This is what the market badly needs,” he stated.
