The late Liam Payne, former One Direction star, will make his final television appearance on Netflix’s “Building the Band,” premiering July 9. This posthumous role offers fans a chance to see Payne one last time, less then a year after his death in Argentina.
The singing competition series features Payne as a guest judge, offering advice to aspiring singers. In a released teaser, Payne urges contestants to find a “connection” with each other. His experience with One Direction, formed on “X Factor” in 2010 by Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger, made him uniquely qualified to assess group chemistry.
“Building the Band” brings Payne together again with Scherzinger, who serves as a judge and mentor. Kelly Rowland, of Destiny’s Child, also appears as a guest judge. Backstreet Boys singer AJ McLean hosts the series, which features 50 singers forming six bands.
Netflix confirmed Payne’s posthumous appearance earlier in June, noting that production wrapped before his death. Payne’s family has expressed support for his inclusion in the series. Netflix stated that Payne’s family reviewed the series and supports its release.
Payne died Oct. 16 after falling from a balcony in Buenos Aires. He was 31. Authorities resolute his death resulted from multiple traumas and bleeding caused by the fall. A toxicology report revealed traces of alcohol, cocaine, and antidepressants in his system.
While two hotel workers and Payne’s friend, Rogelio “Roger” Nores, were initially charged in connection with his death, appeals court judges cleared them in February. However, two remaining suspects, accused of supplying Payne with narcotics, will face trial, officials announced this month.
What’s next
The trial for the two suspects accused of providing narcotics to Payne is pending. Fans can anticipate the premiere of “Building the Band” on July 9, offering a final glimpse of the singer and his insights on creating accomplished musical groups.
