tetsuya Yamagami, the man who fatally shot former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, received a life sentence on Wednesday, January 21, 2026.
Yamagami murdered Abe in July 2022, using a homemade firearm during a campaign speech in Nara, Japan.
Judge Shinichi Tanaka delivered the sentence at a court in Nara, as reported by Reuters and AFP.
The court found Yamagami guilty of murder and violating gun control laws. Prosecutors had sought the death penalty, but the judge steadfast that Yamagami’s actions did not warrant the maximum punishment.
Abe’s assassination shocked Japan and prompted a review of security measures for public figures.
