Newcastle United Secures Thrilling 2-1 Win Over Wolverhampton
LONDON - (dpa): Newcastle United overturned a 0-1 deficit with a thrilling 2-1 win over hosts Wolverhampton in the fourth round of the English Premier League Football Championship.
The first half ended with Wolverhampton taking the lead through Mario Lemina in the 36th minute. However, Newcastle went ahead in the final quarter-hour of the match, after Fabian Scarr and Harvey Burns scored for the visitors in the 75th and 80th minutes, respectively.
With the result, Newcastle maintained their unbeaten record in the tournament this season, after securing a third win against a single draw. They moved up to third on goal difference behind second-placed Arsenal, level with them on the same score, two points adrift of Manchester City, the defending champions for the past four seasons.
Wolverhampton’s score, which suffered its third defeat in the tournament this season, has stopped at just one point in eighteenth place (third from bottom). They are among the 6 clubs still looking for their first win in the competition this season.
Both teams exchanged attacks in the first half, with Wolverhampton scoring through Lemina from a quick counter-attack. Jurgen Strand Larsen sent in a creeping cross from the right, which Joao Gomez left for his fellow Gabonese player, completely unmarked. Lemina shot a ground ball from inside the penalty area, placing the ball to the right of Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope.
Newcastle organized their ranks in the second half, and the equalizer came in the 75th minute through Swiss Fabian Schar. After a series of passes, the ball found its way to the Swiss player Bruno Guimaraes, who fired a thunderous missile from outside the penalty area. The ball reached the upper right corner of the Sam Johnstone goal.
Newcastle’s players continued their missile prowess, and the second goal came in the 80th minute through Harvey Burns. He received the ball from Joe Wilke and shot powerfully from outside the area into the top right corner of the Wolverhampton goal.
