A Historic Uprooting
for over 100 years, the aroma of freshly roasted coffee has wafted from Lindvalls kaffe on Kungsgatan 60 in Uppsala,Sweden. But this long-standing tradition is facing an abrupt end. The Swedish Transport Management requires the property to facilitate a new railway advancement in central Uppsala, forcing Lindvalls to vacate its premises by autumn 2026.
Founded in 1891 as a kolonialvaruhandel (colonial goods store) in Tierp by Eric adn Josefina Lindvall, the business quickly became a fixture in the region before relocating to Uppsala. Lindvalls Kaffe’s history is deeply intertwined with the city’s own, evolving from a small shop to a respected kafferosteri (coffee roastery).
Impact on Employees and the Future of the Roastery
The relocation poses a notable threat to the livelihoods of Lindvalls’ 20 employees at the roastery. ”If we do not roast coffee, they risk dismissal,” stated Ulf lindvall,CEO of Lindvalls Kaffe. The company’s future is now uncertain, as the compensation offered by the Swedish Transport Administration is insufficient to finance the construction of a new roasting facility.
This isn’t simply a business move; it’s the potential loss of a skilled workforce and a cherished local institution. The disruption extends beyond the immediate employees, impacting suppliers and the wider Uppsala community who rely on Lindvalls for their daily coffee.
A Family Legacy at Stake
Ulf Lindvall, representing the fourth generation of the Lindvall family to lead the business, expressed profound sadness at the prospect of losing their historic location. ”It is indeed incredibly sad that our history in this place will end in this way,” he said. The current situation represents more than just a business challenge; it’s the potential end of a family legacy built over a century.
Lindvalls Kaffe has also distinguished itself through a commitment to sustainability, pioneering efforts in Sweden for responsibly sourced coffee and eco-friendly packaging. Their journey from a small trading post to a champion of ethical coffee production is a testament to their enduring values.
