Litera has unveiled new capabilities for Kira, its AI-powered contract intelligence platform, aiming to accelerate and refine the contract review process for legal teams. The updates, showcased in an AL TV Product Walkthrough on , focus on a hybrid AI approach that combines generative AI with proprietary, lawyer-trained models.
Kira’s core function remains the centralization of complex contract reviews. The platform provides a single dashboard for automatic document classification, task assignment, real-time status tracking, and project management. However, the latest enhancements build upon this foundation with features designed to extract and summarize data more efficiently and with greater control.
A key addition is “Generative Smart Fields,” which allows legal teams to automatically extract and summarize key data points from large volumes of documents. This expands Kira’s use cases beyond its existing “battle-tested proprietary AI fields,” enabling users to work with natural language while maintaining a high degree of accuracy. According to Litera, this feature allows teams to go “beyond insights” already provided by the platform.
Crucially, Litera emphasizes a governance-first approach to AI implementation. The hybrid AI model allows users to toggle generative AI on or off, providing flexibility to match the specific defensibility requirements of each project. This is particularly important in legal contexts where the reliability and traceability of information are paramount. The platform’s design acknowledges that “close enough isn’t good enough” in contract review, aiming for over 90% accuracy across more than 1,400 proprietary AI fields.
The integration of Lito, Litera’s AI Legal Agent, further streamlines the workflow. Combined with Litera’s existing drafting, transaction, and knowledge management tools, the platform aims to automate every step of the transaction process. This end-to-end automation is intended to reduce manual effort, minimize risk, and accelerate deal cycles.
The platform also introduces a dynamic “analysis grid” for quick, tabular review and cross-document comparison. This feature, along with direct export capabilities to Word and Excel, is designed to expedite report generation and improve the delivery of insights to clients.
Litera positions Kira as a solution for legal teams of all sizes, from large enterprise firms to smaller practices. The company states that Kira is currently trusted by 70% of the top 50 global law firms, as well as firms within the UK’s “Magic Circle” and Canada’s “Seven Sisters.” We see also used by three of the “Big Four” accounting firms. This broad adoption suggests a significant level of confidence in the platform’s capabilities within the legal industry.
The hybrid AI architecture is built on 30 years of legal expertise and a decade of AI innovation. This combination of domain knowledge and technological advancement is intended to deliver “battle-tested precision” and mitigate the risks associated with relying solely on generative AI. The ability to control the use of generative AI is a key differentiator, allowing firms to balance the benefits of speed and automation with the need for defensibility and accuracy.
Pabi Ambikainathan, Group Product Manager at Litera, guided viewers through the new features in the AL TV Product Walkthrough. The demonstration was followed by a Q&A session with Artificial Lawyer, providing further insights into the platform’s functionality and potential applications.
The enhancements to Kira reflect a broader trend in the legal tech industry towards integrating generative AI while maintaining a focus on accuracy, governance, and risk mitigation. Litera’s approach suggests a recognition that while generative AI offers significant potential, it must be deployed responsibly and in conjunction with established legal expertise.
