Liverpool & Arsenal Chase Ajax Star Sean Steur | Transfer News
Ajax Midfielder Sean Steur Attracts Premier League Interest
A growing number of top European clubs are monitoring Ajax midfielder Sean Steur, with several Premier League giants reportedly leading the chase for the 18-year-old. While AZ Alkmaar’s Kees Smit has garnered significant attention in the Eredivisie, Steur is now viewed by some scouts as a potentially superior talent.
Steur is expected to follow Smit, who is also linked with a possible move to the Premier League, out of the Dutch league this summer. Having made his first-team debut last season, Steur has quickly established himself as a key component of the Ajax squad, progressing from Jong Ajax to become a regular starter under interim boss Fred Grim.
Described as a ball-playing, two-footed holding midfielder, Steur has demonstrated composure and skill beyond his years, seamlessly integrating into the first team despite limited senior starts.
Interest in Steur surged earlier this year when Eintracht Frankfurt initiated talks, but the club quickly realized his rising reputation could price them out of a deal. Now, a host of English clubs are vying for his signature.
Premier League Contenders Emerge
Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester United have all been closely monitoring Steur’s performances in recent weeks, dispatching scouts to multiple Ajax matches. All three clubs are in the market for a holding midfielder and are evaluating whether Steur is ready for the demands of the Premier League.
Arsenal have been exploring younger options, including Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi, but Steur’s development has positioned him as a strong contender. Liverpool and Manchester United are also considering other targets, including Elliott Anderson, Carlos Baleba, and Adam Wharton, but Steur’s name is now part of the conversation.
Beyond the Premier League
The interest extends beyond England’s top flight. Chelsea and Manchester City, through their respective ownership groups BlueCo and City Group, have been tracking Steur for a longer period. Tottenham and Newcastle United, both previously admirers of Smit, have also expressed interest in the Ajax prodigy.
Ajax are keen to retain Steur’s services long-term, with some within the club believing he possesses the potential to become their best midfield prospect since Frenkie De Jong. This comparison underscores the excitement surrounding his future.
This season, Steur has made 30 appearances across all competitions, contributing two goals and four assists. Despite a disappointing campaign for Ajax Steur’s performances have been a significant positive.
Steur is currently under contract with Ajax until 2028, giving the club a strong negotiating position. However, with so many prominent clubs expressing interest, a prolonged stay in Amsterdam appears increasingly unlikely.
Liverpool Also Linked with Robertson and Van de Ven
In addition to the pursuit of Steur, Liverpool are also navigating other transfer matters. Interest is intensifying in left-back Andy Robertson, who is set to become a free agent at the end of the current season.
Celtic are reportedly keen on bringing Robertson back to Parkhead, but three Premier League clubs are also interested, though one of those clubs is considered unlikely to secure his signature.
Liverpool are firmly in contention to sign Tottenham centre-back Micky van de Ven, who is reportedly open to leaving Spurs this summer amid the club’s struggles. Manchester United and Real Madrid are also monitoring the situation, adding another Dutch player to Liverpool’s shortlist.
