Liverpool regains lead with a difficult victory over Sheffield

Liverpool regained the top spot in the exciting race for the English Premier League title after Alexis McAllister’s powerful shot and a late header from Cody Gakpo secured a difficult 3-1 win over bottom club Sheffield United on Thursday.

Liverpool raised its score to 70 points from 30 matches, two points ahead of second-placed Arsenal and three points ahead of defending champion Manchester City, both of which won on Wednesday to increase the pressure on Liverpool.

It seemed that the strange opening goal scored by Darwin Nunez in the 17th minute after he closed the space in front of goalkeeper Ivo Grbic and stopped his attempt to clear the ball and turned it into the net would open the door wide as Liverpool sought to achieve the victory it needed to remove Arsenal from the top spot.

But coach Jurgen Klopp’s team was far from its best, and Sheffield United shocked the Anfield crowd shortly after the end of the break when Connor Bradley accidentally scored an equalizer against his team.

It seemed that the visiting team was able to hold on and come out with a shocking point before a loose ball reached McAllister in the 76th minute, and he fired a shot with his right foot into the top corner. Gakpo then scored the goal to secure the three points in the 90th minute.

Sheffield United is 10 points away from the safety zone and appears to be close to quickly returning to the second division.
