Liverpool, fresh off securing the Premier League title, are reportedly preparing a busy summer transfer window, with activity expected both in bringing in new talent and potentially reshaping the squad. While the Reds recently finalized the signing of Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes – a deal worth $82 million (£60M) – the focus has already shifted to identifying further reinforcements for Arne Slot’s team.

One name consistently linked with a move to Anfield is Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton. Reports indicate Liverpool have made an offer of £50 million for the 21-year-old England international, with the club eager to strengthen their midfield options. The interest in Wharton comes despite a midfield revamp undertaken before Jurgen Klopp’s departure last summer, suggesting Slot sees a need for further investment in that area of the pitch.

However, Wharton isn’t the only Premier League player attracting Liverpool’s attention. Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs has emerged as a potential target, with the club, along with Manchester City and Chelsea, reportedly lining up bids for the 23-year-old Dutch stopper. Roefs has been in sensational form for Sunderland, keeping a clean sheet in a third of his games as the Black Cats sit eighth in the Premier League table. Sunderland’s recent acquisition of Melker Ellborg from Malmo is believed to be, in part, a response to the growing interest in Roefs.

The potential pursuit of Roefs raises questions given Liverpool’s current goalkeeping situation with Alisson Becker. However, recent reports suggest Alisson’s future at Anfield may be limited to this season, making a move for a goalkeeper like Roefs more plausible.

Beyond Wharton and Roefs, Liverpool were also linked with a move for Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida in January, but a deal ultimately fell through due to complexities. The club’s interest in players from the Stadium of Light suggests a scouting network that is actively identifying talent outside of the traditional top-six clubs.

The transfer window also saw Liverpool miss out on Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano, who has agreed to fresh terms with the German club, ending interest from Liverpool, Chelsea, and Tottenham.

Looking ahead, Liverpool are also reportedly considering potential partnerships for Jacquet upon his arrival in the summer. Discussions are underway regarding a possible modification to Harvey Elliott’s loan deal with Aston Villa, with a resolution expected to benefit all parties involved. There’s speculation surrounding Xabi Alonso, a former Liverpool midfielder, as a potential candidate to replace Pep Guardiola at Manchester City at the end of the season.

The summer transfer window promises to be a crucial period for Liverpool as they look to build on their Premier League success and establish themselves as a dominant force in English and European football. While the £50 million bid for Adam Wharton signals a willingness to invest in young talent, the interest in players like Roefs suggests a broader assessment of squad depth and potential long-term replacements. The club’s proactive approach to identifying and pursuing targets indicates a clear strategy under Arne Slot, even amidst uncertainty surrounding the future of some current squad members.

Crystal Palace are reportedly bracing themselves for bids for Wharton, with the midfielder having impressed with his maturity and quality on the pitch. Manchester United are also said to be keen on the 21-year-old, potentially leading to a competitive bidding war. While Palace initially quoted clubs at £100 million for Wharton in January, that figure is expected to decrease to around £80 million by the summer.

The pursuit of Wharton aligns with Slot’s desire to strengthen Liverpool’s midfield with a promising talent who possesses strong distribution, vision, and aggressiveness in winning possession – attributes that complement the high-pressure, quick-transition style of play he has established. The Reds are described as current favorites to land his signature, alongside Manchester United, although Manchester City and Real Madrid are also reportedly monitoring the situation.
