London Arson Trial:⁤ Men Accused of Acting for Russia’s‌ Wagner group

⁢ Updated June 04, 2025

Six men are on trial in London, accused of carrying out an arson attack ‌on a⁤ business allegedly at the behest of Russia’s Wagner mercenary⁤ group. The targeted‍ warehouse,‍ located on an east London industrial estate, belonged to ⁤Oddisey, a company⁣ involved ‌in shipping packages and humanitarian aid, including Elon Musk’s Starlink equipment, ‍to Ukraine.

Paul English, 61, Nii Kojo Mensah, 23, Jakeem Rose, ⁣23, and ⁢Ugnius Asmena, 20, are charged with aggravated arson. Dmitrijus Paulauskas, 23, and Ashton Evans, 20, deny knowing about terrorist acts but failing to disclose information.

prosecutor‍ Duncan⁣ Penny told ‍the‍ Old Bailey court that the arson was ⁢an ‌act of criminality under‌ “foreign influence.” He stated that Dylan Earl, who previously admitted⁣ to aggravated arson and preparing acts endangering life under the National Security Act (NSA), organized the attack while “knowingly‌ acting at the behest of the Wagner Group.”

Penny said Earl expressed a‌ willingness to undertake ‍”missions,” with the Leyton arson attack being the first. He added that Earl knew he was ‍acting against ukrainian interests and for Russian interests.

Jake Reeves,23,previously pleaded guilty to‍ aggravated arson and ⁣admitted obtaining a material benefit from a foreign intelligence agency, specifically accepting money from Wagner via Russian security services, according to penny.

Earl and Reeves⁣ were also allegedly involved in a plot ⁤targeting the Hedonism ‌wine shop and Hide restaurant in London’s Mayfair district, properties valued at over 30 million pounds ($40.7⁣ million). The scheme ⁤included kidnapping the owner,a prominent⁣ Russian dissident and vocal critic ⁤of⁢ Russian president Vladimir Putin, who had ‍personally delivered aid to Ukraine.

In messages shown to the court, Earl said⁢ the target should be brought to him⁣ so he could be “exhiled [sic] to Russia to face ‍prison.”

British authorities have accused‍ Russia of orchestrating various spy ⁣plots and sabotage missions in the U.K. and across Europe. The U.K.’s domestic spy chief has stated‌ that Russian operatives ⁢are attempting to ⁤cause “mayhem.”

The Kremlin has denied⁢ these ‌accusations. The⁣ Russian embassy in london has refuted any ‍involvement ⁤in the warehouse fire, asserting that the British government routinely blames ⁣russia for negative events in Britain.

Wagner had a notable role in Russia’s war effort in⁣ Ukraine until its founder, Yevgeny Prigozhin, led a⁢ short-lived mutiny against‌ Russia’s defense establishment in 2023.

Penny said the ‌jury would hear expert testimony indicating ⁤that the Wagner Group and its activities, including sabotage in Europe, are now under ⁢the direct ⁤command of the Russian government. He suggested the defendants might have‍ been motivated by greed, as the warehouse fire led to an insurance claim estimated at over 1 ⁢million pounds ($1.36 million).

The jury⁣ was shown messages between the men, security camera footage, and phone⁣ recordings allegedly showing their involvement in traveling⁣ to the‍ warehouse and ⁢starting the fire with petrol,‍ Penny said.

What’s next

The trial, expected to last up to five weeks, continues⁤ as the ⁢court examines evidence related to the arson attack and the alleged involvement ⁢of‍ the defendants with the Wagner⁢ Group⁢ and Russian interests.
