[메디컬투데이=최재백 기자] It was found that women who took medications for hypertension had a lower risk of developing uterine fibroids.

Research findings showing that women taking medications for hypertension have a lower risk of developing uterine fibroids were published in JAMA Network Open.

Uterine fibroids are muscle tumors that grow in the uterine wall and commonly occur in women under the age of 50. Fibroids can be asymptomatic, but when symptoms appear they often cause pain, excessive menstruation, and pressure in the urinary and rectal areas.

According to some studies, uterine fibroids are associated with high blood pressure, and it has also been stated that causes of high blood pressure, such as activation of the renin-angiotensin system, can cause damage to uterine smooth muscle cells, leading to the formation of uterine fibroids. .

High blood pressure can cause uterine fibroids, either through atherosclerosis, shear forces, or on its own, and conversely, uterine fibroids can also cause increased blood pressure.

As a result, a research team recently claimed that certain high blood pressure medications can help prevent the development of fibroids.

The research team explained that reducing blood pressure with antihypertensive drugs reduces the risk of atherosclerosis and prevents damage to the smooth muscles of the arteries that supply blood to the uterus. Additionally, they predicted that certain hypertension drugs that inhibit the renin-angiotensin system would have a more direct effect in preventing the development of uterine fibroids.

They concluded that new or untreated high blood pressure in middle-aged women may increase the risk of uterine fibroids and that taking antihypertensive medications may reduce the risk of uterine fibroids.

Meanwhile, experts stressed that it is unclear how hypertension drugs prevent uterine fibroids, and because the mechanisms of action of each hypertension drug are different, more research is needed to prove the connection between hypertension and uterine fibroids.

However, they noted that hypertension can lead to serious and fatal diseases such as heart failure, stroke, and kidney failure, and that it is very important to carefully manage hypertension regardless of whether hypertension medications help prevent uterine fibroids.

They emphasized that people at high risk of cardiovascular disease should take antihypertensive medications to manage blood pressure and adapt their dietary and lifestyle habits to reduce overall cardiovascular risk.
