Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has urged that former U.S. President Donald Trump be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize without delay, arguing that such recognition would help end ongoing global conflicts.
Speaking during a visit to Portugal, Lula stated that Trump “has to win the Nobel Peace Prize as soon as possible to end the wars,” according to reports from G1 and other Brazilian media outlets. He reiterated this position across multiple interviews, telling Poder360 that this proves necessary to “give the Nobel Peace Prize to Trump right away” and informing Valor Econômico that the prize should be awarded “immediately” to halt wars worldwide.
Lula’s comments reflect a broader call from some international figures for Trump to receive the honor, which he has publicly sought. The Brazilian president also criticized the United Nations for its perceived inaction in the face of rising armed conflicts globally.
In remarks reported by VEJA, Lula denounced the paralysis of the UN Security Council, suggesting that institutional failures have contributed to the escalation of violence in various regions. He further expressed concern about the dangers of concentrating power in individual leaders, warning in Correio do Povo that “we cannot be at the mercy of a president who can start wars.”
Lula made these statements while in Lisbon, Portugal, alongside the country’s Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, during joint press engagements. His remarks were delivered in an ironic tone, framing the suggestion as a provocative critique of global militarism rather than a literal endorsement.
The statements come amid heightened international tensions, including ongoing conflicts in multiple regions and strained relations between major powers. Lula has previously called for dialogue between world leaders to address what he describes as the “madness of war” that the world can no longer endure.
