What is a Total Lunar Eclipse?
A rare and captivating astronomical event is on the horizon: a total lunar eclipse, set to grace the skies in September. This isn’t just any eclipse; itS expected to be the most extensive of the year, with the moon remaining fully immersed in Earth’s shadow for an impressive 82 minutes. During a total lunar eclipse, the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow that completely covers the lunar surface. This alignment isn’t just a straight line – it requires a precise configuration of all three celestial bodies.
The eclipse will occur between the night of September 7th and the early hours of September 8th. As the moon enters the Earth’s shadow, it doesn’t disappear entirely. Rather, it takes on a distinctive reddish hue, frequently enough referred to as a “Blood Moon.” This coloration is the result of sunlight being filtered and refracted through Earth’s atmosphere, scattering away most of the blue light and leaving behind the longer wavelengths of red and orange, as explained by the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI).
Who Will See the Eclipse?
The best views of this total lunar eclipse will be available to observers in Europe, Africa, East Australia, and New Zealand.Unfortunately, those in Brazil will not be able to witness the eclipse directly due to their geographical location. Though, the event will be streamed live on platforms like YouTube, allowing anyone with an internet connection to experience the spectacle.
According to Space.com, the eclipse will begin at 15:28 GMT (12:28 PM Brasilia time) and conclude at 20:55 GMT (5:55 PM Brasilia time
