Maison Sams: A Burst of Color in Old Lyon
Old Lyon gained a vibrant new presence in December 2024 with the opening of Maison Sams, a silk atelier founded by artist Sarah Amsellem. The boutique, located on rue Saint-jean, immediately draws the eye with its striking contrast: elegant golden lettering spelling out “Maison Sams” against a stark black facade, framing a window overflowing with color.
The Artist behind the Silk
Amsellem, a graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts de Lyon (Lyon School of Fine Arts), infuses her personality into every design. She describes herself and her team as creation bulimics
, a playful acknowledgment of their prolific output. Her work is characterized by a joyful energy and a masterful blend of floral motifs, animal depictions, and the flowing lines of Art Nouveau.
Amsellem personally designs all of the patterns, creating a harmonious explosion of bright colors that define the Maison Sams aesthetic. The designs aren’t simply printed onto the silk; they are meticulously crafted, reflecting Amsellem’s artistic background and dedication to detail.
Lyon Silk: A tradition reimagined
Lyon has a long and storied history with silk production, dating back centuries. The city was once the center of European silk weaving, and Maison Sams contributes to this legacy by offering a contemporary interpretation of this traditional craft. The boutique provides a unique shopping experience for those seeking handcrafted, visually stunning silk pieces.
