Chinese and mainland cinema classics spanning more than three decades of filmmaking will be screened during the upcoming M+ Restored Festival, zolimacitymag.com reported. The retrospective runs from November 1 to December 27, 2026, at M+ Cinema located on Museum Drive at WestK.
Festival Features Nine Restored Hong Kong and Mainland Films
The festival brings together nine fully restored Hong Kong and mainland films that document the birth of the Hong Kong New Wave. The lineup covers invention across a period spanning more than thirty years, featuring titles such as The Arch (1968), The Butterfly Murders (1979), The System (1979), Love Massacre (1981), and The Story of Woo Viet (1981).
Rounding out the nine-film collection are Homecoming (1984), Just Like Weather (1986), Cageman (1992), and Durian Durian (2000). Over the past three years, M+ Cinema has worked on restoring these classic local movies, generating more than 130 screenings across 44 different cities, including film festivals in Cannes, Venice, and New York.

Filmmakers Discuss Creativity Through Panels and Generational Pairings
Alongside the screenings, the event features a series of Q&As, panel discussions, and workshops. Filmmakers and industry personalities Ann Hui, Chan Kin Long, Bai Xue, Yim Ho, Cheung Chi-sing, Jacob Cheung, Philip Yung, Fruit Chan, and George Chang are scheduled to appear to discuss filmmaking, creativity, and restoration.
Three of the restored films will screen back-to-back with contemporary works to provoke a conceptual dialogue between generations. Ann Hui’s The Story of Woo Viet is paired with Chan Kin-long’s Hand Rolled Cigarette (2020), Yim Ho’s Homecoming is paired with Bai Xue’s The Crossing (2018), and Fruit Chan’s Durian Durian screens alongside Philip Yung’s Port of Call (2015).
Future Additions to the Collection
Looking ahead, six additional restored movies will join the collection in 2027 as the archive expands to include films from across the region.
