Ster-Kinekor launched Africa’s first free-roam VR Arena on 9 October 2026 as part of a major revamp of its Tyger Valley cinema complex in the Western Cape. The multimillion-rand revamp transforms the regional entertainment hub with four distinct technological offerings designed to cater to luxury seekers, families, and gamers alike.
SKX-PERIENCE Arena Merges Physical Movement with Digital Environments
The centerpiece of the upgrade is the SKX-PERIENCE Free-Roam VR Arena, which accommodates up to six players at a time. The arena merges physical movement with digital environments using state-of-the-art headsets, precision haptic controllers, and advanced spatial tracking. Players can walk, dodge, and interact across a multi-sensory playground featuring tactical shooters like The Finals, sci-fi combat adventures, and underwater expeditions in Ocean Depths.
Alongside the virtual reality space, the cinema complex debuted its proprietary APEX Cinema. Ster-Kinekor chief marketing officer Lynne Wylie stated that the premium large-format auditorium features a wraparound screen extending close to the walls and ceiling. The projection system utilizes 4K laser technology paired with an advanced 16.1-channel sound system that includes multiple subwoofers positioned around the room and behind the screen.
Luxury Seating and Family Offerings at the Western Cape Mall
The venue also reopened two auditoriums as Cine Prestige theatres, which Ster-Kinekor markets as the business class of cinemas. These spaces feature single and double leather recliner chairs serviced by a dedicated adjoining lounge where patrons can order food and drinks delivered directly to their seats.

Families visiting the mall gain access to a redesigned Kids’ Cinema equipped with brightly coloured beanbag seating, activity tables in a dedicated foyer area, and a specialized catering counter. Bookings for all four entertainment offerings went live ahead of the 9 October 2026 opening date.
