Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado presented her Nobel Peace Prize medal to President Trump during a private White House meeting Thursday, but teh president reaffirmed his belief that she lacks the support to lead her country. Machado won the prize last year for her efforts to promote democracy in Venezuela and offered the 18-carat gold medal as “recognition of his unique commitment to our freedom.” Trump accepted the medal, despite the Nobel Peace Center’s assertion that the award is non-transferable.
hours after receiving the medal, Trump thanked Machado on social media, writing, “María presented me with her Nobel Peace Prize for the work I have done. Such a wonderful gesture of mutual respect. Thank you María!”
The White House shared a social media image of Trump holding a framed display of the medal, accompanied by an inscription thanking him for “Unusual Leadership in Promoting Peace through Strength, Advancing Diplomacy, and Defending Liberty and Prosperity.”
The meeting marked the first face-to-face encounter between the two leaders. It occurred as the United States continues to allow key officials from the regime of deposed President Nicolás Maduro to remain in power while Trump oversees the transition of power in Venezuela.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump entered the meeting seeking a “frank and positive discussion about what’s taking place in Venezuela.” She also confirmed that Trump maintains his position that Machado doesn’t have the ”support” or “respect” necessary to lead Venezuela, a view he initially expressed on the day of her primary victory. more on Machado’s Nobel Prize win.
