A number of european leaders have jointly expressed their support for Denmark, firmly opposing former US President Donald Trump’s previous plan to gain control of the Greenland region.
The statement was signed by French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and Spanish Prime Minister pedro Sanchez.
“Arctic security remains a top priority for Europe and is of vital importance for international and transatlantic security,” the leaders stated, according to AFP on Tuesday (6/1/2026).
They highlighted that Denmark, including greenland, is a member of NATO and urged the United States to respect the territorial sovereignty of nations.
“Therefore, security in the Arctic must be achieved collectively, together with NATO allies including the United States, by upholding the principles of the UN Charter, including sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders,” the statement continued.
“These are global principles, and we will not stop defending them,” they affirmed.
While acknowledging the US as a crucial NATO ally, the European leaders underscored that Greenland’s future rests with its people, not with external acquisition.
“greenland belongs to its people. Denmark and Greenland, and only they, have the right to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland,” they concluded.
