French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the importance of a ceasefire in Lebanon, stating that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s refusal to sign a truce with the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah would be a “mistake.”
During a press conference in Montreal, Canada, President Macron expressed his concerns about the escalating conflict in Lebanon. He revealed that the United States and France had jointly proposed a mediation plan with Prime Minister Netanyahu, which he urged Netanyahu to accept.
“It would be a mistake for the Prime Minister to reject it,” President Macron warned. “No one should be held responsible for an uncontrolled increase in wars and civilian casualties in Lebanon.”
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also weighed in on the issue, emphasizing the need for an immediate ceasefire. “We must reach a ceasefire immediately,” he said.
President Macron’s efforts to broker a truce between Israel and Hezbollah, as well as the Palestinian armed faction Hamas, have been met with criticism from pro-Palestinian protesters. A group of protesters gathered outside the conference hall, shouting “Shame on you” and “You have blood on your hands.”
President Macron addressed the protesters, explaining in English, “Let me be clear, we are not selling arms, we are asking for a ceasefire, and for this, we have gone to the Security Council.”
