Macron’s Masterstroke: Michel Barnier Takes the Helm as France’s New Prime Minister
Emmanuel Macron Appoints Michel Barnier as Prime Minister
French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed Michel Barnier as the new Prime Minister, ending a two-month suspension.
Michel Barnier, a former right-wing European commissioner, was appointed Prime Minister on September 5, 2024. This decision comes after intense research and consultations.
The new Prime Minister is tasked with forming a new “unification government,” as announced by the Elysée shortly after 1 pm. This appointment follows the dissolution of the government on June 9 and the second round of legislative elections, which resulted in an Assembly without a majority or a viable coalition.
A demonstration is planned for Saturday, September 7, in Paris, against the “Macron coup” at the call of several student organizations, together with La France insoumise, the PCF, and the Ecologists.
