Expert Doubts New Evidence in Madeleine McCann Search Will Surface
Updated June 02, 2025
A former investigator involved in the Madeleine McCann case has tempered expectations for the current police search in Portugal. German authorities are conducting a fresh search this week, 18 years after the three-year-old girl disappeared from Praia da Luz.
Mark Williams-Thomas, who previously investigated the area, believes it is unlikely that any new evidence related to the Madeleine McCann disappearance will be found. The search is concentrated near the Portuguese resort where McCann was last seen and a house once occupied by prime suspect Christian Brueckner.
Williams-Thomas said he thoroughly investigated the area during his Paramount+ examination, “Madeleine mccann: The Case Against Christian B,” and filmed extensively there. He conveyed his skepticism in a seven-word statement on X: “I cannot see any evidence being found.”
He added that Brueckner was last seen at the address 10 months before Madeleine McCann went missing.
The Portuguese source indicated the operation began Tuesday, with preparatory work possibly preceding it. The focus is on land searches to locate any signs of Madeleine McCann’s body.
German investigators identified Christian Brückner, 48, as the prime suspect in 2020. He is currently imprisoned in Germany for an unrelated offense. The current search is expected to last three days, involving approximately 30 german officers.
This marks the first search in Portugal in over two years, following a previous operation at a remote dam. The current search encompasses 21 privately-owned plots, including open and unfenced areas, wells, ruins, and water storage tanks.
British police are not directly involved. A Met Police spokesman confirmed awareness of the german search and pledged support where necessary.
What’s next
The search is expected to continue for three days, with German police meticulously examining the designated areas. The outcome of this search remains to be seen, but authorities are committed to pursuing all possible leads in the ongoing investigation into Madeleine McCann’s disappearance.
