Renewed Madeleine McCann Search Focuses on Portugal’s Algarve Region
Updated June 4, 2025
Authorities have resumed the Madeleine McCann search in Portugal’s Algarve region, focusing on abandoned buildings for potential clues. The second day of the operation saw police activity concentrated in pockets of vast scrubland.
Officers were observed using chainsaws to cut down a tree inside a derelict barn. Elsewhere, teams emptied rubble from dilapidated buildings and lifted stones from an old stone hut. The missing person case has remained open for 18 years.

Ground radar equipment might potentially be deployed to scan the floors of these structures. The terrain is dry, making digging a hot and exhausting task.
An officer stated that “nothing has been found” so far.Approximately 30 German police officers are involved in the operation, using tents as their base.

Fernando Teixeira, a criminology professor at the university of Porto, said the Algarve search would have been meticulously planned. He noted the use of identification techniques for any bone fragments discovered, along with engineering-supported equipment to detect potential remains.

the Ocean Club Holiday resort, where the McCanns stayed, is located about a mile from the search site. Locals in Praia da Luz have mixed feelings about the renewed attention on the case.

Taryn Brown, who runs a beauty spa near the apartment, said the search has upset residents.”It keeps dragging down Praia da Luz,” Brown said. “It took a long, long time to recover so this keeps dragging it all up again.”
The McCanns have not commented on the current operation. They are accustomed to the disappointment of searches yielding no results.
What’s next
Authorities have two days remaining to search the area, hoping to uncover a clue that might lead to answers about Madeleine’s disappearance.
