Madrid Half Marathon Death Not Linked to COVID-19 Vaccine, Experts Say
Madrid – The death of a 38-year-old participant in the Madrid Half Marathon from cardiorespiratory arrest is not related to the COVID-19 vaccine, despite claims circulating on social media, according to medical experts. Social media posts have falsely asserted a link between the COVID-19 vaccination campaign and an increase in deaths due to heart problems.
Messages on platforms such as Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) claimed the runner’s death during the Madrid Half Marathon was a direct consequence of the COVID-19 vaccine.
“First the Covid and then the vaccines. increasingly affected by the contraindications of the vaccines that denied us to read.”
These messages also referenced the case as an example of “sports sudden deaths,” a term used by conspiracy theorists to falsely attribute the deaths of athletes and public figures to COVID-19 vaccines.
Cardiovascular Death Rates Have Decreased
Specialists consulted by news outlets emphasized that there is no established cause-and-effect relationship between the runner’s death and the COVID-19 vaccine. Data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) indicates a slight decrease in deaths related to heart problems in Spain as the pandemic began.
In the first half of 2020, 46,422 deaths were attributed to diseases of the circulatory system, including ischemic heart diseases, cardiac arrest, and hypertension. Provisional data for the same period in 2024 shows 42,397 deaths from these causes.
While tragic, deaths during the Madrid half marathon are not unprecedented. Records show three other participants died during the race as 2005 – one in 2005, another in 2010, and a third in 2018.
Dr. Leonel Díaz González, a sports cardiologist and member of the Spanish Society of Cardiology, told news outlets that the causes of cardiovascular-related deaths in athletes vary by age group.
In individuals under 35, congenital heart diseases, often undiagnosed, are the primary concern. Older athletes are more susceptible to heart attacks and are affected by risk factors such as obesity and diabetes, according to Díaz González.
Paloma Fernández, director of the magazine corricular, noted that a meaningful percentage of participants in races of this nature do not undergo medical testing to assess their fitness for such strenuous physical activity.
“The casuistry is infinite, many heart diseases are there.”
Fernández added that the large number of participants in popular races increases the statistical likelihood of such incidents.
Organizers reported approximately 24,000 participants in the Madrid Half Marathon.
A 2021 study by the Spanish Society of Cardiology found that 96% of sudden deaths recorded in sports affected recreational athletes, with 63% attributed to myocardial infarctions or angina.
As in the Madrid case, many deaths occur in the final stages of the race, when athletes are pushing their physical limits. Díaz González suggested this is linked to runners’ determination to achieve their goals, leading to maximum exertion at a time of extreme exhaustion.
No Evidence Linking vaccine to Increased Cardiac Deaths
Díaz González stated there is no data supporting an increase in deaths due to heart problems or sudden death in the general population following COVID-19 vaccination.
Several studies have indicated that COVID-19 vaccines have been effective in reducing severe myocarditis associated with the disease. Furthermore, patients with heart failure who contract COVID-19 have a significantly higher chance of survival if vaccinated.
Therefore, no evidence links sudden deaths in sports to the COVID-19 vaccine, and official records do not support claims of increased deaths from heart conditions following vaccine administration.
