Maia Dunphy discussed her experiences as a single parent to her son Tom, who is nine. She expressed feeling ‘very lucky’ to have him. However, she highlighted the pressures that single parents face, which she believes many two-parent families do not understand. This pressure escalated after her mother’s diagnosis with pancreatic cancer, a cause she is passionate about raising awareness for.
Maia shares Tom with her ex-husband, comedian Johnny Vegas. Currently, Tom lives with her full-time while Johnny works in England. During her mother’s illness, Maia found it challenging to balance being an attentive daughter and a single mother. She described her time as “exhausting,” as she had to juggle Tom’s needs while caring for her mother.
Her greatest fear is falling ill. Maia explained that if she were to get sick, there is no one to help take Tom to school or manage other responsibilities. This reality became especially clear during the COVID-19 pandemic when a friend suggested a playdate despite her family being sick.
After her split from Johnny in 2020, Maia’s mother, Helen, played a crucial role in raising Tom. Helen’s illness and eventual death in 2022 added to Maia’s stress. She recounted her frantic routine of dropping Tom at school, visiting the hospital, and managing Tom’s activities.
During this difficult period, Maia lacked a driving license, making her responsibilities even harder. She often had to rely on her sister to come from London for support.
Despite the struggles, Maia feels grateful for Tom. She believes children provide motivation and joy, helping her navigate through dark times. She emphasized that caring for Tom forces her to stay engaged and active.
Maia is currently championing a campaign to raise awareness about pancreatic cancer. She stressed the importance of discussing the disease publicly, as many people perceive it solely as a fatal diagnosis. Maia wants to highlight that some patients can survive and that awareness can lead to better outcomes.
