Chelsea is reportedly engaged in discussions with AC Milan regarding a potential transfer for French goalkeeper Mike Maignan. The move aims to address Chelsea’s ongoing search for a reliable, long-term option in goal.
AC Milan has placed a valuation of approximately £25 million on Maignan. However, Chelsea is hesitant to meet that price and is currently negotiating for a reduced fee. Maignan, 29, has been a key player for Milan as his arrival from Lille in 2021, when he signed a five-year contract.
Maignan has also become the first-choice goalkeeper for the French national team, succeeding Hugo Lloris in January 2023. As his international debut in 2020, he has earned 30 caps for France. Sources indicate that Maignan is receptive to the idea of joining Chelsea.
Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation has been unstable as the acquisition of Kepa Arrizabalaga in 2018 for £71 million, a world-record fee for a goalkeeper. Subsequent signings, including Edouard Mendy, Robert Sanchez, Djordje Petrovic, and Filip Jorgensen, have not solidified the position.
What’s next
The coming weeks will be crucial as Chelsea and AC Milan continue their negotiations. A prosperous acquisition of Maignan could provide Chelsea with the stability they have long sought in their goalkeeping department.
