Beijing – Tensions flared across teh Taiwan Strait this week as mainland China condemned Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for blocking mainland participation in the 2024 Shanghai-Taipei City Forum.zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, criticized the DPP’s actions, stating they were “unreasonable and widely unpopular.” The move resulted in the exclusion of several mainland delegates and journalists from the event,which has been alternately hosted by the two cities since 2010.
Despite the DPP’s actions, this year’s forum saw meaningful discussions between representatives from both cities, culminating in the signing of two memoranda of understanding aimed at fostering further collaboration.”The mainland will continue to work with Taiwan compatriots to promote cross-Strait exchanges, cooperation and integration,” Zhu emphasized.
The DPP’s move drew particular attention after Shanghai Deputy Mayor Hua Yuan expressed the city’s intention to promote group tours for Shanghai residents to Taiwan during the forum’s opening ceremony.
Zhu reaffirmed mainland China’s consistent support for the normalization of cross-Strait exchanges, including tourism. “We look forward to the early resumption of travel to Taiwan for mainland residents, including those from Shanghai,” she said.Zhu urged the DPP authorities to lift restrictions hindering cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation.

Zhu Fenglian: The DPP’s actions are deeply regrettable. Their decision to block mainland participation was unreasonable and goes against the wishes of the people on both sides of the strait.
ND3: Despite this setback, the forum still saw some progress, with both sides agreeing to two memoranda of understanding. What is beijing’s view on these agreements, given the current political climate?
Zhu Fenglian: We welcome any efforts to promote cross-strait dialog and cooperation, even in the face of challenges. The signing of these memoranda of understanding demonstrates a willingness on the part of some Taiwanese participants to move forward.
ND3: Shanghai deputy Mayor Hua Yuan expressed interest in opening up group tours for Shanghai residents to Taiwan. Does Beijing support this initiative, and are there concrete plans to move forward?
Zhu Fenglian: The mainland has consistently advocated for the normalization of cross-strait exchanges, including tourism. We firmly believe that increased people-to-people interaction is crucial for building mutual understanding and trust. We look forward to the early resumption of travel to Taiwan for mainland residents, including those from Shanghai.
ND3: What message does Beijing have for the DPP following this recent incident?
zhu Fenglian: We urge the DPP authorities to abandon their divisive ideology and cease actions that hinder cross-strait exchanges and cooperation. Working together, we can create a brighter future for the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
