“It cannot be postponed any longer. It is irresponsible and dangerous for patients,” stated Marc Brosseau, a pulmonologist and intensivist, and president of the Council of Doctors, Dentists, and Pharmacists.
Dr. Brosseau noted that patients are sharing rooms, leading to the spread of infections. He also mentioned that the elevators are ”at the end of their life” and frequently malfunction. “I have been stuck in an elevator twice with a patient in intensive care. It is indeed not normal.”
Due to the deteriorating infrastructure, doctors have reportedly begun refusing patients with leukemia.
“We feel betrayed,” commented Dr. Brosseau.
An emergency meeting was convened with doctors, dentists, and hospital pharmacists to address the situation.
Dr. françois Marquis, head of intensive care, criticized the Minister’s postponement of the project. He stated that all modernization projects within the hospital have been on hold for years pending this work.
Dr. Marquis described the state of disrepair: “in the hospital, the ceilings leak, and there are two-way drafts. It snowed in intensive care last winter!”

Denis Cloutier, president of the Syndicat des Professionnels en Care de l’Est-de-l’île-de-Montréal (FIQ), expressed difficulty in understanding the Minister’s explanations.
“We have been planning these works for over 10 years. The needs are urgent. The hospital costs a fortune to maintain.”
Regarding the morale of the staff, Mr. Cloutier said,”There is disappointment,a little anger, with a good dose of cynicism.”
Dr. Jean Roy, a specialist in stem cell transplants, added, “Our working conditions are pitiful.”
“Hear, it’s almost a slum. In summer, it reaches 40 degrees, there is no place to sit, and patients are in rooms three or four at a time. It is totally unacceptable.”
“Purely Electoral”
According to Vincent Marissal, a member of the National Assembly for Rosemont with Québec Solidaire, the Council of Ministers is divided on this project, a claim refuted by Minister Dubé.
“there is part of the cabinet that does not want to spend 5 to 6 billion in eastern Montreal. It is purely electoral.I would say, in all honesty: it is not even the minister who is blocking it.He would never have put his name on this to be said that he is not able to deliver. He is not able because his colleagues do not allow him to do so,” said Marissal.
It is typically a reaction of government at the end of the regime, which does not have the frank cubits and which fears the rebellion internally.

Christian Dubé faced criticism from opposition parties. The leader of the Parti Québécois, Paul St-Pierre plamondon, stated, “The government is going back on it’s word to start the renovation project of the hospital this summer. It is a scandal. it is really a shame.”
According to premier François Legault, the renovation of the Maisonneuve-Rosemont hospital is “an significant file” that will be “carried out as quickly as possible.” He added, “Obviously, we have to manage a file this big in a serious way.”
The renovated hospital is planned to have 720 beds and around 30 baby beds, compared to the current 400 beds. These will be individual rooms, rather than double rooms. The construction is intended to be completed in a single phase and will “increase the size of the hospital by more than 50%.”
