Malayalam Film Industry Faces Backlash as Actor Abhilash Faces Criticism Over Remarks and Producer Allegations

The Malayalam film industry is once again embroiled in a public dispute as writer Abhilash Pillai levelled serious allegations against producer Murali Kunnumpurath, claiming financial mismanagement and deliberate attempts to damage careers. The controversy centres on the films ‘Nadikalil Sundari Yamuna’ and ‘Sumathi Valavu’, with Pillai asserting that the producer failed to repay substantial loans and misrepresented budget details to secure funding.

According to Pillai, he personally lent ₹3 lakhs to Murali Kunnumpurath for the production of ‘Sumathi Valavu’, a claim he reiterated during a press meet in Kochi. He stated that despite repeated requests, the amount has not been returned, describing the producer’s assurances of repayment as false. Pillai further alleged that Murali had informed technicians and crew members that the film was being made on a large budget to secure their commitment, while in reality, no such funding existed.

The writer also accused the producer of providing full financial advances to certain actors without similar support for the technical crew, creating an imbalance in payment distribution. Pillai claimed that during periods of financial loss, Murali proceeded to fund a Tamil remake of ‘Sumathi Valavu’ through advance payments, which he characterised as an attack on the original film’s team.

These allegations emerged amid an ongoing controversy surrounding the film ‘Malikappuram’, in which producer Murali Kunnumpurath had claimed in an interview with News Malayalam 24*7 that the film was ghost-directed by actor Unni Mukundan. Pillai, along with director Vishnu Sasi Shankar, challenged these claims, with Shankar stating that Mukundan had previously offered strong emotional and professional support to the project.

Abhilash Pillai also criticised what he described as coordinated public relations efforts aimed at damaging the reputations of filmmakers and technicians in the industry. He argued that such campaigns unfairly attribute success to individuals like Unni Mukundan while placing blame for failures on directors and crew members, a pattern he said has become increasingly prevalent.

The dispute has drawn attention to broader concerns about financial transparency and ethical practices within the Malayalam film industry, particularly regarding loan agreements, budget disclosures, and the treatment of technical personnel during productions that encounter financial difficulties.
