Malena Ivarsson breaks silence in new documentary Sexpredikanten

Nearly forty years after a wave of bomb threats and moral panic forced her off the air, sexologist and host Malena Ivarsson is breaking her silence in a new two-part documentary titled Sexpredikanten. Directed by Sindra Grahn, the project revisits the turbulent 1988 run of Malmö-TV’s sensuous Friday-night program Fräcka fredag and the subsequent public backlash that drove Ivarsson to relocate abroad.

While the bold late-night format initially drew millions of viewers in the spring of 1988, it rapidly ignited a nationwide controversy, yielding public hostility and severe security threats. The program was canceled after airing only six episodes, leaving a lasting psychological impact on both Ivarsson and her family. I don’t like to be reminded of that time, Ivarsson said. Worst of all was for my children, who were teased at school and often came home sad.

Revisiting the 1988 Cultural Storm

The controversial broadcast served as a lightning rod for broader societal anxieties regarding sexuality during the late 1980s. The new documentary captures the intense scrutiny, conflicts, and enduring scars left in the wake of the broadcast. In Sexpredikanten, Ivarsson returns to that era alongside podcast co-host Samanda Ekman, with whom she later collaborated on the sex-themed podcast Till sängs.

Reflecting on the decades-long silence that followed the cancellation, Ivarsson described the lingering emotional weight of the backlash. It has felt like a heavy cement lid, but now I have gone through a kind of process and woken up alive down in my Fräcka Fredag chest, she told in Sexpredikanten.

Broadcasting and Streaming Availability

The first installment of Sexpredikanten premiered on October 22, running for 56 minutes with available subtitling and sign-language interpretation. The two-part series brings archival clips from the 1988 media storm together with contemporary interviews, examining how a television program about sensuality became the focal point for an era of Swedish moral panic.
