Michigan state Senator Mallory McMorrow, a leading Democratic candidate in the state’s upcoming US Senate race, has deleted approximately 6,000 posts from her X (formerly Twitter) account, including all tweets prior to 2020. The removal of the posts comes after scrutiny of her past social media activity, particularly comments perceived as critical of rural America and supportive of “coastal elites.”
CNN’s Andrew Kaczynski first reported on the purge of McMorrow’s X account on Wednesday, noting the timing followed a report by The Post in April 2025 detailing her previous tweets. According to CNN KFile’s review of the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, McMorrow had, until recently, maintained a substantial archive of posts on the platform.
Past Tweets Sparked Controversy
Among the deleted posts were comments that drew criticism for appearing to disparage the state she is now seeking to represent. A 2014 tweet, now deleted, read, “Aaaand it’s snowing. Screw you, Michigan. #NYCtoLA.” McMorrow also expressed nostalgia for California in a 2017 post, stating, “There are days like these that make me miss California even more,” the day before Donald Trump’s presidential victory was certified by Congress.
Further fueling the controversy, McMorrow also deleted a post from before Trump’s inauguration where she mused about a potential division of the United States. “I had a dream that the US amicably broke off into The Ring (coasts+Can+Mex+parts Mich/Tex) and Middle America,” she wrote in the since-deleted tweet.
Residency Questions Raised
The deleted tweets also raised questions about McMorrow’s residency. While she stated in her 2025 autobiography that she “relocated permanently” to Michigan in 2014, CNN KFile’s review revealed posts from as late as July 2016 where she identified as a California resident. These posts included references to voting in California’s June 2016 Democratic primary and being a constituent of California Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu. Public records indicate she registered to vote in Michigan in August 2016.
McMorrow, currently a Michigan state senator, is competing in the Democratic primary to replace retiring Senator Gary Peters. She has positioned herself as a moderate candidate and is considered a rising star within the party. Last year, she expressed frustration with the perception that Democrats appear “elitist” and “academic,” but her past social media activity suggests otherwise, including agreement with users critical of rural voters and assertions that Trump supporters were poorly educated.
“We’ve downplayed the importance of quality education for all, replaced it with fear and blaming and anger, and here we are,”

The deletions come as Democrats prepare for a competitive primary in Michigan’s Senate race. McMorrow’s campaign has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the removal of the tweets or the questions surrounding her past statements and residency.
