Man Arrested for Abusing Konkuk University Goose: Solidarity for Animal Freedom in Ilgam Lake, Seoul

A man in his 60s has been arrested by police for abusing a goose, known as the “mascot” of Konkuk University.

Seoul Gwangjin Police Station announced on the 17th that it is investigating Mr. A, a man in his 60s, without detention on charges of violating the Animal Protection Law. Mr. A is accused of hitting a goose’s head several times with his hand at Ilgam Lake, a lake on the campus of Konkuk University in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, at around 3:30 pm on the 11th.

The Animal Freedom Association reported Mr. A to the Gwangjin Police Station on charges of violating the Animal Protection Law, and the police arrested Mr. A on the afternoon of the 16th. According to the police, the Mr. A said: “I was playing with the goose when the goose attacked me and hit my head with its hand.”

The goose in question is called “Geongoose” and is known as the mascot of Konkuk University. “Geon Goose” is a term combining “geon” from Konkuk University and “goose” meaning goose, and two of them are known to currently live in Lake Ilgamho.

According to a video released by the Animal Freedom Alliance on the 16th, Mr. A is seen touching the neck and head of a dried goose. The man immediately hit the goose’s head with a hand wearing a black glove, causing it to fall to the ground. Dongjaeon said the goose had suffered a head injury and was bleeding.

The police and Animal Freedom Solidarity checked the scene on the 16th to examine the condition of the dried goose and it was confirmed that the goose was in good condition with no particular injuries.
