Manchester City’s Premier League title Wins and Associated Investigations
Early Success and Initial Scrutiny (2008-2011)
Manchester City experienced a important transformation following its acquisition by the Abu Dhabi United Group in September 2008. This investment led to a rapid influx of talent and a climb in Premier League standings. The club won its first major trophy in 35 years, the FA Cup, in May 2011, defeating Stoke City 1-0 according to The Guardian.
Though, this period also marked the beginning of scrutiny regarding the club’s financial practices. In November 2011, UEFA opened an investigation into Manchester City’s compliance with Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations as reported by UEFA. The initial concerns centered around alleged inflated sponsorship deals.
UEFA Investigation and Sanctions (2014)
The UEFA investigation culminated in sanctions in May 2014. Manchester City was found to have breached FFP regulations and was fined €60 million (approximately £50 million at the time) and faced restrictions on its Champions League squad size according to the BBC. The sanctions were reduced on appeal to €49 million and eased squad restrictions.
UEFA’s report detailed that Manchester City had failed to comply with the break-even rule, primarily due to what UEFA considered to be overvalued sponsorship contributions from companies linked to its owners. The club maintained its innocence, arguing that the sanctions were politically motivated.
Premier League Investigation and Independent Commission (2023-2024)
In February 2023, the Premier League launched a new investigation into Manchester City, alleging over 100 breaches of financial rules as 2009 as announced by the Premier League. These breaches encompassed areas such as accurate financial information, profit and sustainability rules, and cooperation with investigations.
An independent commission was convened to hear the case. On May 24, 2024, the commission found Manchester City guilty of 115 breaches of Premier League rules, but did *not* strip the club of its Premier League titles. Instead, the commission imposed a record points deduction of four points, to be applied to the 2024-2025 season according to Reuters. The commission stated that the breaches did not amount to a lack of good faith, but were serious enough to warrant a sanction.
Manchester City instantly announced its intention to appeal the decision, stating it was “surprised and disappointed” by the outcome as detailed in a club statement. the appeal process is expected to be lengthy and could perhaps reach the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
