Man in His 70s Swept Away and Killed in Gyeongnam Flood: Reporter Seo Yun-sik

Due to the heavy rain that fell yesterday, a man in his seventies died after being swept away by a stream in Gyeongnam.

The village was submerged by a sudden rise in water and the inhabitants were evacuated due to the risk of landslides.

119 members of the rescue team are carrying out search operations relying on ropes.

However, it is not easy to resist the fast and strong current.

Yesterday, around 5.30pm, a man in his 70s went missing after being swept away in a village in Goseong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do.

The man was found dead in a stream 300 meters from the accident site a day after his disappearance.

In a village in Daeyang-myeon, Hapcheon-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, water has reached waist height and rescuers are evacuating residents in boats.

About 40 residents whose village was submerged by water that suddenly rose in the middle of the night are in a social welfare center.

The local government is investigating whether the flooding was caused by improper drainage of the river.

“It is very wrong to build buildings blocking the river, and the response to that problem has been quite inadequate…”

About 70 residents of four cities and counties, including Hadong-gun, Namhae-gun and Hapcheon-gun, were also evacuated due to dangers such as landslides and collapsing retaining walls.

There were 69 reports of damage caused by trees falling along roads or soil spills, and there were power outages in some areas.

In Gyeongnam, heavy summer rainfall recorded 260.6 mm of rain in Namhae-gun, 234.5 mm in Hadong-gun and 156.5 mm in Jinju.

On the island of Jeju, where a record rainfall of over 900 mm fell on Mount Hallasan, 93 flights were canceled yesterday and 14 reports of damage were received.
