A 46-year-old man was arrested in Carson City on April 4, 2026, following a series of incidents involving gunfire directed at city infrastructure and a high-speed vehicle pursuit that ended in a fiery crash.
The suspect, identified as Kerry Benson, is accused of shooting at multiple traffic cameras along Fairview Drive, between Roop Street and South Edmonds. According to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, two of the shooting incidents caused the lithium batteries within the camera systems to catch fire.
Police Pursuit and Crash
Law enforcement began responding to reports of gunshots and fires in multiple locations in south Carson City shortly before 1:15 a.m. On April 4, 2026. Deputies located a suspect vehicle near Sonoma Street and Carson Street, at which point the driver fled from officers.
The pursuit continued through south Carson City and moved east toward Carson River Road. The chase concluded near Pinion Hills Drive when Benson’s vehicle overturned and caught fire.
Benson was taken into custody at the scene. Due to head and leg injuries sustained during the crash, he was transported by Care Flight to Renown Regional Medical Center. Authorities reported that no other individuals were injured during the incident.
Investigation and Legal Status
The incident is being handled by two separate agencies. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting of the city-owned camera systems, while the Nevada State Police are managing the investigation into the vehicle crash.
Benson is facing charges related to the shootings, arson and evading police. He was expected to be arraigned on Monday, April 7, 2026, to determine bail status.
