Trump Calls for Newsom Arrest Amidst LA Immigration Protest Deployment
Updated June 10, 2025
President Donald Trump has publicly endorsed the arrest of California Gov. Gavin Newsom amidst escalating tensions over immigration protests in Los Angeles. The Trump administration authorized the deployment of 700 Marines to the city following weekend demonstrations against ICE immigration raids that turned violent.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the deployment from Camp Pendleton, stating it was necessary to protect federal agents. “We have an obligation to defend federal law enforcement officers – even if Gavin Newsom will not,” Hegseth said.
The move follows the activation of 2,000 National Guard troops over the weekend, a decision Newsom criticized as inflammatory, while the White House characterized the protests as “chaos.”
The White House posted a video on X showing burning cars and protesters blocking Highway 101, stating, “While Los Angeles burns — officers ambushed, city in chaos — Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom, and Maxine Waters call the riots and insurrection ‘peaceful’… President Trump stands for law and order.”
Asked about newsom’s challenge to “border czar” Tom Homan to arrest him, trump responded, “I would do it if I were Tom… Gavin likes the publicity, but I think it would be a great thing.” He called Newsom a “nice guy” but “grossly incompetent.”
Newsom responded on social media, “The president of the United States just called for the arrest of a sitting governor. This is a day I hoped I would never see in America… this is an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism.”
Newsom announced he would deploy 800 additional state and local officers to Los angeles. “Chaos is exactly what Trump wanted, and now California is left to clean up the mess,” Newsom stated on X.
Newsom and California Attorney General Rob Bonta are suing the Trump administration over the activation of the state’s National Guard without state approval. Bonta called it “an abuse of power.”
During Friday’s ICE raids, protests erupted, blocking streets and freeways. The Los Angeles fire Department responded to multiple vehicle fires, including Waymo autonomous electric vehicles. According to public facts officer Erik Scott,EV battery fires are tough to extinguish, and allowing them to burn is sometiems the safest approach.
Over the weekend, approximately 70 people were arrested after demonstrations spilled onto the 101 freeway. Some protesters threw objects at officers.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said she met with immigrant rights leaders, stating, “Let me be absolutely clear — as a united city, we are demanding the end to these lawless attacks on our communities. Los Angeles will always stand with everyone who calls our city home.”
What’s next
The legal battle between California and the Trump administration is expected to intensify, while law enforcement continues to manage the ongoing protests and ensure public safety in Los Angeles. The debate over immigration policy and federal authority remains at the forefront.
