Updated June 4, 2025
The upcoming Mario Kart world is breaking new ground by including characters previously deemed unfit for racing. Conkdor, an ostrich-like enemy from Super Mario 3D World, can now compete alongside Mario and others on various vehicles. This marks a notable shift in the series’ approach to playable characters, as developers reconsidered conventional requirements for racers.
Kosuke yabuki, producer, said that in past games, the team considered whether a character could drive, thinking they needed hands and feet. Now, the focus is on surprising and delighting players with a diverse and unexpected roster in Mario Kart World.
With at least 50 confirmed characters and numerous costume variations,Nintendo prioritized characters that players woudl enjoy and use. Yabuki emphasized the importance of seeing these characters alongside others during a race, contributing to the fun.
The new cast includes characters lacking hands, feet, or both, such as Goomba and Pokey. yabuki acknowledged the absurdity, stating,”OK,sure, they can drive,” and admitted he couldn’t explain how they drive, but emphasized the importance of surprising and delighting players.
“I probably wouldn’t be able to even explain how they drive exactly in this setting, but so long as we’re surprising and delighting people, I think that’s the important part.”
Kosuke Yabuki, Producer
The game’s cow character has already become a fan favorite. Yabuki anticipates that othre new characters, like the penguin, will also gain popularity. Though, he hopes players will still choose classic characters like Peach and Mario.
Mario Kart World accommodates up to 24 players, a significant increase from the 12-player limit in Mario Kart 8. yabuki explained that doubling the number of racers was necessary to create a populated and fun feeling in the game’s vast, interconnected world.
Balancing was crucial to manage the increased chaos of larger races. Yabuki noted that adjustments were made to attacks, crashes, and spinouts to prevent the gameplay experience from becoming too stressful. He also acknowledged the fun in embracing the chaos of a free-for-all.
