Maritime Police Officer Receives Award for Heroic Rescue at Sea

Maritime Police Officer hailed as Hero for Preventing Second Accident at Sea

In a courageous act, a maritime police officer clad in a sleek black suit emerged as a modern-day superhero as he stood on the boat’s rail. Moments later, without hesitation, he fearlessly plunged into a running boat. This extraordinary incident took place on the morning of June 19 near Sacheon-myeon, Gangneung, Gangwon-do.

Earlier, a dreadful collision between fishing boat A, heavily laden with Jumunjin, and ship B, brimming with Sichuan, had occurred. Tragedy struck when the captain of ship A fell into the treacherous waters during the accident. Fortunately, the captain of ship B rescued him, escorting him to safety at the Sacheon Port in Gangneung.

However, a grievous situation unfolded as ship A, now lacking a commander, continued to recklessly traverse the vast expanse of the sea. Racing at a speed of 16 to 17 knots, equivalent to 30 km/hour, the vessel posed a significant threat to maritime safety.

Upon receiving the distress report, the vigilant Coastguard sprung into action. Swiftly, they located vessel A, which had ventured approximately 20 km into the open sea following the collision. Hesitating not a moment, a valiant police officer, identified as Lim Seong-gyu from the distinguished Donghae Maritime Police Station, courageously leaped into the boat, skillfully halting its journey.

Recognized for Heroic Actions

Donghae Regional Maritime Police Agency has bestowed honor upon Lim Seong-gyu, commending his extraordinary bravery and quick thinking to avert a potential second catastrophe. Bestowed with a special promotion order, Lim’s commendable efforts make him an outstanding civil servant, setting an example in the realm of public safety.

Expressing gratitude for the accolade, Lim humbly stated, “As a police officer, I simply fulfilled my duty, and I appreciate this award. I shall continue to dedicate myself wholeheartedly in the future.”

When the captain of ship A fell into the sea in this accident, the captain of ship B rescued him and took him to Sacheon Port, Gangneung.

The problem is that A, who has lost his captain, continues to run at sea.

A was crossing the sea at a speed of 16 to 17 knots and 30 km/hour.

The Coastguard, dispatched after receiving the report, found the vessel A, which had gone about 20 km out into the open sea after the collision, and immediately jumped in and stopped the vessel .

The police officer who jumped in was Lim Seong-gyu, a member of the Donghae Maritime Police Station.

The Donghae Regional Maritime Police Agency announced that it selected Lim, who prevented the second accident, as an outstanding civil servant who took the lead in the field of public safety and awarded him a special promotion order.
