Delaware Life Insurance Co. and Clear Spring Life and Annuity Co., both units of Group 1001, received grand jury subpoenas in February, according to regulatory filings submitted on June 26.

Federal Subpoenas Target Related-Party Investments

Prosecutors in Manhattan are examining whether the insurance companies failed to disclose that their private credit holdings backed other ventures controlled by Walter. That inquiry is running in parallel with an ongoing investigation by the US Securities and Exchange Commission, according to regulatory filings cited by Insurance Business Magazine.

The grand jury subpoenas followed an earlier prosecutorial inquiry opened last year into Guggenheim Partners’ $362 billion asset management arm. Walter serves as the chief executive of Guggenheim Partners. As scrutiny mounted across the financial network, the Federal Bureau of Investigation executed at least one search warrant in September to seize a mobile phone. Regulatory disclosures do not specify which part of the broader investigation the seized device relates to, according to reporting from Insurance Business Magazine.

Group 1001 Units Unwind Holdings

In response to the mounting federal interest, Delaware Life Insurance Co. and Clear Spring Life and Annuity Co. began actively untangling their financial connections to affiliated entities. Group 1001 operates both life insurance units, which hold significant private credit portfolios now facing regulatory review over potential conflicts and disclosure failures regarding related-party backing.

The parallel probes by Manhattan prosecutors and the SEC focus squarely on transparency issues within private credit allocations. Neither Delaware Life nor Clear Spring has released further public statements detailing the scope of the asset unwinding process beyond their June 26 regulatory disclosures.
