M&T Bank Appoints Kalyana Bedhu as Head of AI Engineering

M&T Bank has appointed Fannie Mae veteran Kalyana Bedhu as its new head of artificial intelligence engineering, according to a LinkedIn announcement made on Tuesday, August 11, by Chief Information Officer Linda Tai. Bedhu will oversee the engineering, platforms, architecture, and governance capabilities designed to accelerate AI innovation and adoption across the eastern United States.

Leadership Background in Regulated Enterprise AI

Bedhu joins M&T Bank following a tenure at Fannie Mae, where he served as the artificial intelligence and machine learning leader, according to his professional profile. During that time, he accelerated model transformation efforts by deploying generative artificial intelligence capabilities within a heavily regulated environment, Tai stated in her LinkedIn post.

Prior to his work at Fannie Mae, Bedhu held engineering leadership roles focused on artificial intelligence and machine learning at Microsoft. His career also includes three positions at Ericsson, concluding with a stint as head of artificial intelligence. Commenting on his new role via LinkedIn on Tuesday, August 11, Bedhu stated: Excited to join a team with a strong legacy, firing on all cylinders to modernize and build what’s next. In an annual message to shareholders released in March, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer René Jones reported that the bank spent more than $1.2 billion on technology in 2025. The institution currently employs 2,000 technologists distributed across more than 300 teams. Jones emphasized in the shareholder message that management’s primary focus remains on developing internal talent while strengthening system reliability, availability, resiliency, and agility.
